Chapter 7
Blair
I GLANCED AT MADDOX, who gave me an encouraging nod.
Well, in for a penny, or some crap like that. "Let's start with the sage. If these spirits have any sense of smell left, they'll hate this."
We passed the smoldering bundle over the pendant, the smoke curling lazily upwards, but the air remained eerily still. No ghostly wails, no signs of displeasure. Just silence. Maddox's hand brushed against mine as he took the sage.
"Right, Plan B." I reached for the holy water next, splashing droplets onto the shimmering surface of the amulet. Nothing happened. Vinegar, then salt water followed, each attempt as useless as the last.
"Maybe they're more the frankincense and myrrh type?" Lily said with a wry grin. She always tried to keep things light, even when they got weird, which was pretty much always.
"Can't hurt to try." Reedâs tone dripped with skepticism as he handed me the fragrant resins.
We burned them until the air was thick with their ancient scent. The pendant seemed to absorb the smoke, becoming a shade darker, but there was no change in our specter predicament.
"Really hoped that would do it." I sighed and set the jar on the table.
"Perhaps this will suffice." Pearl held out a vial of swirling liquid, a potion the hunters' resident necromancer, Owen, had invented. He swore by it, and so did she.
"Pour it on," Pearl said, and I did, watching as the liquid fizzed on contact, bubbling like mad. But just as quickly as it started, it stopped. The amulet lay there, mocking us in its quietness.
"Pity," Pearl said flatly, before turning on her heel and leaving the room.
"Great, now what?" Lily huffed, crossing her arms.
"Run!" Maddox suddenly shouted, his eyes wide as he lunged for me.
I turned just in time to see a different artifact, a bronze statue, just miss me as the air shimmered with anger, hot spots forming rapidly. The ghosts were more than just a little miffed. They were downright irate.
"Outside, go, go, go," I grabbed Lily's hand and pulled her along. Maddox was right behind us, with Reed taking up the rear, grumbling. "Stupid, stubborn ghosts."
We burst through the doors, our feet pounding against the ground. The phantoms swirled around us like a tempest, knocking over planters and sending small trees flying.
"Should've brought my sneakers for this paranormal cardio." Lily panted as she leaned down and took off her low heels while still running.
"Left or right?" Reed barely managed to dodge a floating garden gnome that whizzed past his head.
"Does it matter? They're ghosts. They don't follow paths." I glanced over my shoulder to find translucent figures nipping at our heels.
"Split up," Maddox said. "They can't chase all of us."
"Good idea," I said. He gave me a quick wink before veering to the right, tugging me along with him, while Lily and Reed dashed off to the left.
"Stay close," I yelled after them, unsure if it was more for their safety or my peace of mind. With a final glance back, I saw the apparitions divide their forces, continuing the absurdly spooky game of tag.
